6/2023 – Rooftop transformation with Terrafix

Terrafix rooftop transformation

Presented with a flat, unsightly rooftop at a home in Oranjezicht, Cape Town, South Africa, Bettina Haug, Euflora Landscaping, needed to find a solution for finishing off a surface that didn’t provide for a traditional roof top garden.

Says Haug: “We had to be able to install a garden of no more than 12cm soil and that can withstand the strong south easter winds common in the area. We also wanted to break the uniformity of a large surface of artificial lawn, installed by EverTurf, to give the garden a more natural look.

Providing stability

The Terrafix blocks were perfect for the job as they are heavy enough not to be blown off the roof, but also allow for enough soil filled pockets for succulents to be planted in.

Since there is limited space for garden most of planting is in planter boxes surrounding the outside areas, adds Haug: “We had to bring in three 2000l trees by crane lifting them over the entire property for privacy. The Driveway is laid out with strip pavers and interplanted with groundcover to get a softer, greener feel and to create more garden.”
