In Pniel, an existing grass embankment was converted to seating at a community sport arena.  Georg Brand of Dassenberg Retaining , the appointed retaining wall contractor,  says the seating demonstrates a combination of step blocks and segmental block retaining, with good  sub-soil drainage in certain places behind the seating.  Says Brand: “For horizontal reinforcing, Y12 steel bars were inserted with a concrete infill into the blocks.”

Westerford High School approached Strata Civils with a proposal of creating an Astro Turf Hockey Pitch with seating, retaining walls between the road and hockey pitch and around the seating and tennis court at the Imhoff sports ground in Newlands, Cape Town, Western Cape.

Construction  involved some on site cutting of the step blocks at an accurate, predetermined angle to create precise corners in the seating arena at the bottom end of the field. The blocks were also additionally reinforced with 3m long Y10 steel bars, and filled with concrete.

The wall was designed with several terraces and stairs

This crb wall was designed with several terraces to accommodate a small golf green, outdoor patio, trampoline and sandpit. At all levels and inside most blocks, plants were established to create softness and texture between the concrete blocks. Step blocks were incorporated to provide comfortable access to the different levels.

Overall, the completed crb wall shows a high-quality ability to combine function with form, while also providing required erosion control, as well as maintaining good visual aesthetics that will continue to improve as plant growth starts establishing itself.
